The client
The Town and City Gift Cards scheme, launched by Miconex, allows debit-style gift cards worth between £10 and £500 to be bought online and redeemed across multiple outlets in a location of the buyer's choice. With local economies under sustained pressure and 22% of the 7.6 million jobs at risk in the UK sitting in retail, Miconex felt it was the right time to invest in a platform that could genuinely support local spending - and local recovery.
The challenge
A no-frills e-commerce website wasn't going to cut it. The existing setup required manual printing and franking for every order, back-end processes were fragmented, and the user experience of finding participating locations wasn't good enough. As the scheme grew - more towns, more cities, more businesses - the cracks would only widen.
The brief was to connect everything into one integrated system, improve the front-end experience for gift card buyers, and build something that could scale.
What we built
The centrepiece of the new platform is an integrated API connecting directly to a centralised fulfilment system - eradicating the need for manual printing and franking entirely, and replacing it with automated customer email notifications, stamps and shipping information. The result: a fulfilment process five times faster than before.
We also improved the Google Maps integration, delivering a significantly better experience for users checking participating locations and businesses nearby.
And with Miconex eyeing expansion into Ireland and the USA, we built the platform to scale - both in terms of the number of programmes it can support and the geographies it can operate across.
